Outside Looking In

The Kovy saga continues as the NHLPA and the NHL have both agreed to extend the deadline on making a ruling on the contract between the Devils and Kovy until Friday at 5pm EST.

I for one am glad that I'm just a spectator of the ridiculous goings on between Kovy and the NHL and not the fan who is waiting until this all shakes out. Quite frankly I'm glad that my team isn't about to shell out close to a 100 million to a one way player.

I thought that the 17 year contract first submitted was beyond ludicrous and I thought the arbitrator did the right thing by throwing it out. The word on the street is this is roughly 100 million over 15 years instead of 17 and it brings their cap hit up from 6 million per year to 6.6 million. Please can we split hairs any more? The biggest problem the NHL has now is that it has allowed 15 year contracts already, so it's going to be harder to convice people that they have a problem with the term as other players contracts would expire at the 42 year range.

The only thing that may make them able to turn down the contract is if it is still so heavily front loaded and too light on the back end. The idea that he was going to make less than 3% of his contract over the last 7 years is what basically nixed the last deal, if Sweet Lou tries to slide that same thing through again you may see Bettman and Company toss it back in his face.

Either way...as a fan of his former team...I'm glad Kovy took his circus to another town..that way it doesn't affect my club..
